Velvet Disease (Oodinium spp.) in Aquarium Fish


What Is Velvet Disease?

Velvet disease—also called gold dust disease or rust disease—is caused by tiny parasitic dinoflagellates of the genus Oodinium(Piscinoodinium pillulare in freshwater; Amyloodinium ocellatum in marine systems).


This parasite attacks the skin, fins, and gills of fish, causing irritation, breathing difficulty, and in severe cases, death. Velvet is highly contagious and can spread quickly in both freshwater and saltwater aquariums.


Signs of Velvet Disease

Early Signs:

  • Fine yellow-gold or rust-colored “dust” on the skin (may be easier to see under a flashlight)

  • Increased flashing (scratching against objects)

  • Clamped fins

  • Lethargy


Advanced Signs:

  • Labored breathing or gasping at the surface (gill damage)

  • Loss of appetite

  • Weight loss

  • Sloughing of skin or excessive mucus production

  • Death if untreated


Life Cycle & Why Timing Is Important

Velvet parasites have a three-stage life cycle:

  1. Trophont Stage– The parasite feeds while attached to the fish’s skin or gills (visible as gold dust). This stage is resistant to treatment.

  2. Tomont Stage– The parasite drops off the fish and forms a cyst on the substrate or surfaces, dividing into many new cells.

  3. Dinospores– Free-swimming stage that searches for a new host. This is the only stage susceptible to treatment.


The cycle can complete in as little as 4–7 days in warm water, meaning infestations can escalate rapidly.


How Velvet Spreads

  • Introduction of new fish or invertebrates without quarantine

  • Contaminated plants, nets, or equipment

  • Stress from poor water quality or sudden temperature changes


Treatment

Velvet is aggressive and must be treated promptly.


Veterinary-recommended treatment steps may include:

  • Isolating infected fish in a hospital tank.

  • Dimming or turning off aquarium lights—Oodinium relies on light for photosynthesis in some stages.

  • Using prescribed copper-based medications(in freshwater or marine) or other antiprotozoal treatments. Copper levels must be monitored closely for safety.

  • Raising water temperatures slightly (if species tolerate it) speeds the parasite’s life cycle.

  • Treating the main aquarium, other fish are present—this parasite is highly contagious.

  • Performing frequent gravel vacuuming and partial water changes to remove tomonts.


Important: Copper and certain medications can harm invertebrates and some fish species—always follow veterinary guidance.


Prevention

  • Quarantine all new fish for 2–4 weeks before introducing them to your main tank.

  • Avoid cross-contaminating tanks with nets or equipment.

  • Maintain excellent water quality and stable temperature to reduce stress.

  • Disinfect equipment between tanks.
