Recognizing Pain in Reptiles

Reptiles are very skilled at hiding signs of pain — often until they are very ill. This is a survival instinct that protects them in the wild but makes it challenging for owners to notice when something is wrong. Careful daily observation is the key to detecting early signs of discomfort.

This guide will help you recognize pain in your reptile so you can seek prompt veterinary care.

Common Signs of Pain in Reptiles

Behavior Changes

  • Less active than normal or hiding constantly

  • Avoiding basking spots or staying in one place for long periods

  • Increased aggression or striking when handled

  • Unresponsive or unusually calm when normally alert

Appetite & Drinking

  • Refusing prey items or food

  • Regurgitating meals or dropping food while eating

  • Significant weight loss over a short period

Posture & Movement

  • Weakness, dragging limbs, or trouble righting themselves

  • Unusual body positions (arched back, splayed legs, head down)

  • Twitching, tremors, or uncoordinated movements

Physical Appearance

  • Swelling of joints or limbs

  • Dull or discolored skin outside of normal shedding

  • Retained shed (eye caps, tail tip), indicating difficulty shedding

  • Sunken eyes or a very thin body condition

Breathing

  • Wheezing, clicking, or audible breathing

  • Open-mouth breathing or gaping when not basking

  • Bubbles or mucus from the nose or mouth

When to Call Your Veterinarian

Seek immediate care if your reptile:

  • Refuses food for more than 2–3 meals

  • Shows severe weakness, paralysis, or inability to move normally

  • Has open-mouth breathing, bubbles from the nose, or audible wheezing

  • Has a prolapse, major swelling, or visible trauma

Early intervention can relieve pain, improve recovery, and prevent suffering.
