Safe Cleaning & Disinfection for Reptile Enclosures

Why Cleaning Matters

Keeping your reptile’s enclosure clean is essential for preventing illness. Bacteria, fungi, and parasites can build up in dirty habitats and lead to skin infections, respiratory disease, or intestinal problems.

Proper cleaning and disinfection:

  • Removes harmful germs

  • Prevents reinfection after illness

  • Keeps odors under control

  • Creates a healthier environment for your pet

Step 1: Basic Cleaning

Regular cleaning removes waste and organic debris that can reduce the effectiveness of disinfectants.

  • Spot clean daily: Remove feces, uneaten food, and shed skin.

  • Change water daily: Reptiles often soak or drink from their water bowl—keep it fresh.

  • Deep clean weekly:

    1. Remove your reptile to a secure, temporary enclosure

    2. Remove all décor, hides, and substrate

    3. Wash with hot, soapy water and rinse thoroughly

Step 2: Safe Disinfection

Once the enclosure and furnishings are physically clean, disinfect to kill germs.

⚠ Avoid using pine/cedar cleaners, strong household disinfectants (e.g., Lysol®, phenols), or scented cleaners—they can be toxic to reptiles.

Special Cases

  • After Infectious Disease: If your reptile was treated for a contagious illness (such as mites, crypto, or fungal disease), use a disinfectant specifically effective against that organism. Your veterinarian can recommend the right product.

  • Porous Surfaces: Replace natural wood or décor that cannot be fully disinfected.

Step 3: Dry & Reassemble

Allow all items to fully dry before reintroducing substrate and décor. This prevents chemical residue from harming your reptile.

Biosecurity Tips

  • Wash your hands after handling your reptile or cleaning the enclosure

  • Use separate cleaning tools for each reptile enclosure to prevent cross-contamination

  • Quarantine new reptiles for at least 60–90 days in a separate enclosure
