California Kingsnake Care

California Kingsnakes are one of the most popular pet snakes thanks to their beautiful patterns, manageable size, and hardy nature. They are active and curious, making them fun to watch, and they can become tame with gentle, regular handling.

Natural History

  • Scientific Name: Lampropeltis californiae

  • Adult Size:3–4 feet (occasionally up to 5 feet)

  • Lifespan:15–20+ years with proper care

  • Temperament: Curious and active; may be defensive when young, but usually settles with handling

Housing

  • Enclosure Size:

    • Juveniles: 20-gallon tank (or equivalent)

    • Adults: 40-gallon tank or larger (minimum 36" x 18")

  • Substrate: Aspen shavings, paper-based bedding, or reptile carpet. Avoid cedar or pine.

  • Hides: Provide at least two hiding spots — one on the warm side and one on the cool side.

  • Décor: Branches, logs, and artificial plants can help mimic a natural environment and provide enrichment.

  • Security: Kingsnakes are notorious escape artists — ensure tight-fitting lids and secure latches.

Temperature & Humidity

  • Warm Side: 85–88°F

  • Cool Side: 72–78°F

  • Night: Can drop to 68–72°F

  • Heat Source: Under-tank heater or heat tape controlled by a thermostat. Avoid heat rocks.

  • Humidity: Moderate (40–60%). Provide a water dish large enough for soaking, especially during shedding.

Lighting

  • UVB: Not strictly required, but low-output UVB (2–5%) is beneficial for overall health and natural behavior.

  • Photoperiod: Maintain a day/night cycle of 10–12 hours of light per day.

Diet & Feeding

  • Prey: Appropriately sized pre-killed (frozen/thawed) mice or small rats.

  • Size: Prey should be about as wide as the snake’s thickest point.

  • Frequency:

    • Hatchlings/juveniles: Every 5–7 days

    • Adults: Every 10–14 days

  • Feeding Tips:

    • Feed outside the enclosure if your snake tends to strike at movement inside.

    • Always use tongs to offer prey and never handle immediately after feeding.

Handling

  • Begin handling once your kingsnake is eating reliably.

  • Handle gently and confidently, supporting the snake’s entire body.

  • Limit handling during shedding or within 48 hours after feeding.

  • Be aware: Kingsnakes may musk (release a smelly liquid) when frightened — this usually decreases with time and regular handling.

Contact us if you notice:

  • Refusal to eat for more than 3–4 weeks
