Emergency Services for Exotic Pets

At Tree of Life Exotic Pet Medical Center, we understand that when your exotic pet is sick or injured, every minute counts. That’s why we provide emergency care during our regular office hours for birds, reptiles, small mammals, amphibians, and other exotic species. Our team is experienced in handling urgent situations unique to non-traditional pets and is ready to act quickly to give your pet the best possible chance at recovery.

During Office Hours

If you believe your pet is experiencing an emergency, please call us immediately so we can prepare for your arrival. This allows us to:

  • Provide rapid triage upon arrival

  • Allocate the appropriate equipment and staff

  • Offer immediate supportive care when necessary

We prioritize emergency cases to ensure your pet receives prompt attention.

Common Exotic Pet Emergencies

While any sudden change in your pet’s health should be taken seriously, the following situations require urgent care:

  • Difficulty breathing or open-mouth breathing

  • Severe bleeding or trauma

  • Sudden weakness, collapse, or inability to stand

  • Seizures or neurological symptoms

  • Egg binding or difficulty laying eggs

  • Prolapsed cloaca or reproductive tract

  • Inability to eat or drink for more than 24 hours (for small species, even sooner)

  • Significant shell damage in turtles and tortoises

  • Sudden swelling, bloating, or distention

After-Hours Emergencies

If your pet’s emergency occurs outside our normal business hours, we recommend contacting the Veterinary Emergency Group located at Ray Rd. and Interstate 10. While they may not specialize exclusively in exotic animals, they have the facilities and staff to provide immediate stabilization until specialized care can be arranged.

Our Commitment in Emergencies

In urgent situations, our focus is on:

  • Stabilization– Managing pain, shock, and life-threatening symptoms

  • Diagnostics– Quickly identifying the cause of the problem

  • Treatment Planning– Beginning necessary interventions right away or referring to an appropriate facility if specialized 24-hour care is required
