The Importance of a Thorough Physical Examination for Exotic Pets

At Tree of Life Exotic Pet Medical Center, we believe the first—and most important—step in diagnosing health problems in exotic pets is a comprehensive physical examination. Many exotic animals instinctively hide signs of illness until they are very sick. A detailed exam allows our veterinarians to detect concerns early, when treatment is most effective.

Why It Matters

  • Early Detection– Birds, reptiles, and small mammals often mask illness as a natural defense. A physical exam can uncover subtle signs you might not notice at home.

  • Baseline for Health– For new patients or pets without recent checkups, an exam provides a reference point for weight, body condition, and normal findings.

  • Guided Next Steps– Exam results help us determine if additional tests—such as bloodwork, X-rays, or cultures—are needed and which concerns to address first.

What We Include in the Examination

History & Husbandry Review

We’ll ask detailed questions about your pet’s diet, habitat, lighting, temperature, humidity, enrichment, and recent changes in behavior or appetite. This information is critical to understanding your pet’s overall health.

Full Body Assessment

Our veterinarians perform a nose-to-tail (or beak-to-tail) exam, which may include:

  • Observing posture, breathing, and activity before handling

  • Checking weight and body condition

  • Examining skin, scales, feathers, fur, or shell for abnormalities

  • Inspecting the mouth, beak, teeth, eyes, ears, and nostrils

  • Palpating muscles, abdomen, and limbs for swelling, masses, or injury

  • Listening to heart and lung sounds (when possible for the species)

  • Examining the cloaca/vent area for discharge or swelling

  • Assessing coordination, reflexes, and grip strength

Species-Specific Checks

  • Birds– Feather condition, keel bone prominence, sinus health, choanal papillae

  • Reptiles– Shell strength, scale condition, jaw alignment, tail fat reserves

  • Small Mammals– Dental health, ear checks, fur quality, scent gland inspection

Our Commitment to Your Pet’s Health
